From 14–18 July, HyDRA members Dr. Chaojie Cheng from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Dr. Na Liu from University of Bergen (UiB) visited the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Hannover, Germany, to advance joint experimental research on underground hydrogen storage (UHS).
The visit, hosted by Dr. Christian Ostertag-Henning, focused on collaborative work involving Raman spectroscopy and microfluidic techniques—key tools for investigating interactions in hydrogen-rich subsurface environments.
A central highlight was a dedicated working session on HyDRA Work Package 8: “Bio-Geochemical Reactions on Porous Rock Properties During Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS)”. During this meeting, Dr. Anja Dohrmann and Dr. Martin Krüger (BGR) provided crucial insights into microbial selection and biogeochemical processes that influence rock–fluid systems under UHS conditions.
No research trip is complete without a bit of culinary fieldwork. Alongside productive lab sessions and fruitful discussions, the team also took time to explore Hannover’s culinary scene — with a special shoutout to Adam’s Burger for fueling scientific spirits!
We sincerely thank our hosts at BGR for their warm hospitality and collaborative spirit. The visit marked another valuable step in strengthening interdisciplinary cooperation across the HyDRA research network!
